Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro May Offer Lots Of Flexibility For Qualcomm’s Partners When Choosing Newer Or Older DRAM & Storage Standards To Save Costs

Qualcomm is expected to adopt a slightly different flagship chipset launch strategy this year, with the company rumored to introduce two versions called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. One of the biggest differences between the two SoCs is that the top-end one will provide LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage support, but here’s the interesting bit. The latest rumor claims that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro will be compatible with older memory and storage standards, helping reduce component costs for Qualcomm’s partners. Looking at the DRAM crisis, this is a welcome option.

Despite the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 expected to be adopted in higher volume due to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro’s rumored high price, Weibo’s Fixed-focus digital cameras claims that phone makers will have the option to incorporate LPDDR6 RAM, LPDDR5X RAM, LPDDR5 RAM, and UFS 5.0 storage. In comparison, the tipster mentions that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will only feature LPDDR5 RAM support, which is strange to hear because even the non-flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is compatible with LPDDR5X.

It’s possible there was an error on Fixed-focus digital cameras’ end, or perhaps the machine translation didn’t do a tremendous job in providing the relevant information. We also learn that Xiaomi is testing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, which is identified by the unique SM8975 designation, but the company’s flagships may not ship with LPDDR6 RAM. The reason behind this has been provided by another Weibo tipster, Smart Chip Insider, who believes that LPDDR6 RAM will be 20 percent more expensive than LPDDR5X, with only 16GB configurations available.

At this stage, Android phone manufacturers are doing everything in their arsenal to boost margins, and given that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro will be a pricey pill to swallow because Qualcomm will switch to TSMC’s 2nm N2P process for the first time, companies like Xiaomi will have to make compromises on the internal specifications wherever possible. Thankfully, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro’s flexibility should provide some financial relief, even though it will cost Qualcomm’s partners more than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6.
