Miami quarterback Carson Beck was quick to point fingers after Friday’s 24-21 loss to Louisville.
Beck — who threw an interception that sealed a brutal loss for the No. 2 Hurricanes — said that the blunder was caused by a “miscommunication” on the route.
“We have a perfect play for it, but we just had a miscommunication with the route and what we were doing,” Beck told reporters of what went down on the final play. “Just ran the route wrong — I went to go throw it because we’re hot off of the pressure, and, again, he made a good play on it. But it definitely didn’t help that we ran the wrong play.”
On the game-sealing play, Beck attempted to complete a pass to Hurricanes tight end Elija Lofton, but the 22-year-old seemingly underthrew him, leading to Cardinals linebacker T.J. Capers picking off the ball.
Beck threw four interceptions during the upset loss, with the senior throwing for 271 passing yards while completing 25 of 35 passes.
When talking about his other interceptions, however, Beck took some more accountability.
“I have to protect the ball better. That can’t happen,” Beck told reporters. “It’s unacceptable. Again, credit to them. They made some really good plays and played really hard. But at the same time, a lot of those mistakes … didn’t have to happen.”
The loss ultimately snapped Miami’s chances at a perfect season after starting the year with a 5-0 record.
“When you play really good teams, and you’re playing conference football, the margins are really small,” Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal said. “One-possession games reign supreme at this time of year. And if you give away plays, it’s going to get you. You know what?
“Tonight, it got us. Lesson has to be learned and we have to go do something about it. Talking about it ain’t going to do anything.”
