New ‘Charlie’s Angels’ From Pete Chiarelli, Sony In Works

Sony Pictures has tapped Pete Chiarelli (The Proposal) to pen a new installment of the Charlie’s Angels franchise for the studio, Deadline has confirmed.

No word yet on what the latest entry is about or who will be producing. Sony’s most recent attempt at reigniting the franchise came with a 2019 film written and directed by Elizabeth Banks, and starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska, which didn’t fare well at the box office.

A long-running crime-action franchise, Charlie’s Angels originated with the hit ’70s ABC series of the same name, centered on a trio of female private investigators played by Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith. Created by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, and produced by Aaron Spelling, the show broke out as a cultural phenomenon over the course of its five seasons between 1976 and 1981.

Sony first reignited the franchise for film with a 2000 actioner starring Drew Barrymore,, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. Directed by McG, the film was a box office hit, grossing over $264M worldwide and spurring the 2003 sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. The next attempt at breathing new life into the franchise, ahead of Banks’ film, was a 2011 ABC revival starring Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor which was canceled after just a handful of episodes.

Chiarelli is a producer turned screenwriter whose career in the latter area grew out of his work on The Proposal, the hit 2009 rom-com starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Subsequently, he’s worked on titles like Warner Bros.’ Crazy Rich Asians and GOAT, contributing to the story of the latter project from Sony Pictures Animation, which opens in theaters today.
