Mom Collapses from a Rare Allergic Reaction. Then Her Breast Milk Turned Green

A mother in England suffered a near-fatal allergic reaction that caused her breast milk to turn green.

In February 2022, Tia Doyle, 31, collapsed in her home in the middle of the night after falling sick with a bad stomachache and diarrhea symptoms. Her ex-partner found her unconscious and she was rushed to the hospital, Kennedy News reported.

“I started getting a bit hot and sweaty and thought I’d definitely eaten something dodgy,” Doyle shared, saying that she’d initially felt symptoms the week prior. “Very quickly it felt like the room was starting to collapse in, and I just had this feeling of doom in the pit of my stomach.”

Before losing consciousness, Doyle added, “I could feel my throat was closing, and I remember putting my fingers down my throat, trying to hold my throat open almost before fully passing out.”

She added, “My body was starting to shut down.”

Doyle later learned she had gone into anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction, which she initially thought was due to something she had eaten. The mom was still breastfeeding her 3-month-old son, Leo, and had noticed bright green breast milk after the incident.

It turned out that her allergic reaction was not to food — she had monoclonal mast cell activation syndrome (MMAS).

MMAS is “a rare immunological disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of allergy, flushing, stomach and intestinal cramping, diarrhea, wheezing, fatigue and a temporary loss of consciousness caused by a fall in blood pressure (hypotension),” according to the National Institutes of Health.

Doyle was completely surprised by the diagnosis, as her body had never shown signs that anything was wrong prior to the episode.

“I had a clean bill of health, I’d never been allergic or intolerant to anything,” Doyle shared.

“The specialist said they don’t know what causes it to manifest. It could’ve been because my hormones were so high after having my second child. Something knocked my system and caused this to become non-dormant and active. It can be caused by anything and everything, there doesn’t necessarily have to be a specific trigger. I obviously had a reaction to something within my own body that I had a reaction to in my sleep.”

Breast milk may change color as the body attempts to fight illness, according to Kettering Health. Some experts believe it happens because the milk is dense with antibodies.

The exact cause of Doyle’s breast milk to turn, in her words, a “clear putrid green” is unknown.

The mother-of-two has since recovered from her sickness and is seen in videos posted on her TikTok appearing fit and healthy and she continues to raise her two children.

However, she admitted to Kennedy News that the ordeal rattled her.

“The anaphylaxis was very scary. Even now it’s still scary,” she shared. “I’m a single mum at home with two kids. I have one of those panic alarms now.”
