‘Project Hail Mary’ Adds $14.6 Million
“Project Hail Mary” easily claimed the top spot at the Friday box office, already flexing its longevity as 2026’s first major four-quadrant hit.
“Project Hail Mary” grossed $14.6 million on its second Friday in North American theaters, and should earn $53.1 million by Sunday. That figure represents a solid hold, dropping just 34% from the opening weekend numbers. Through two weekends of release, Amazon MGM’s interplanetary epic is projected to make $162.9 million domestically.
From directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the sci-fi dramedy follows Ryan Gosling as a brainy school teacher who is sent into space to save the Sun from a cataclysmic blackout. The film’s opening weekend marked the best debut of 2026 with $140.9 worldwide ($60.4 internationally and $80.5 million in North America). It was also the best opening for an Amazon MGM title, legging out 2023’s “Creed III,” which made $41.8 million overseas and $58 million domestically.
Horror newcomer “They Will Kill You” landed in third place on opening day with $2.3 million domestically from 2,778 locations. Warner Bros. is hoping for around $4.3 million by the end of the weekend.
From director Kirill Sokolov, who also wrote the screenplay with Alex Litvak, “They Will Kill You” stars Zazie Beetz as a housekeeper who takes a job cleaning an NYC high-rise with a history of mysterious disappearances. She quickly learns that tennets are the source of the deadly rumors. Other cast members include Patricia Arquette, Heather Graham, Tom Felton, Myha’la, Paterson Joseph and Armando Rivera.
Landing at No. 2 on Friday was Disney and Pixar’s “Hoppers,” which added $3.2 million. The animated adventure should make $11 million by Sunday. Disney and Pixar bet big on “Hoppers,” shelling out $150 million, but it was an investment well made. Through three weekends of release, the family film is projected to gross $138 million in North America and roughly double that worldwide.
Rounding out the Friday top five were “Reminders of Him” and “Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge.” “Reminders of Him” took fourth with $1.5 million domestically. The literary romance should take home another $4.6 million by Sunday, pushing its domestic total to $40.9 million. “Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge” was at No. 5 with an estimated $1.36 milllion domestically. The action sequel is projected to earn $4.8 million by Sunday, pushing its domestic total to about $22.8 million.
