Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy dies during Baker to Vegas relay race

A deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department died while participating in the 2026 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup relay race, according to authorities.

The department confirmed the death in a post to X early Sunday morning. The deputy, who was identified as Levi Vargas of the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station, experienced a medical emergency during the competition. He was 30 years old, the department said.

“Despite receiving medical care, the Deputy ultimately passed away from their injuries,” the LASD said. “The Deputy’s family has been notified, and the Department has been coordinating with them to provide support and resources.”

Vargas joined LASD in 2015 as a Custody Assistant and later graduated to become a deputy. According to department officials, he served in several assignments and was most recently with the San Dimas Station. 

“He was known among his colleagues and friends for his professionalism, commitment, and compassion to our communities,” LASD said. “His loss is felt deeply across our Department, and he will be greatly missed.”

Department officials said that Vargas is survived by his wife, parents, siblings and extended family members. 

The Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup is a 120-mile relay race for law enforcement teams primarily from California, but sometimes spanning across the world.
