Trump Threatens to Destroy Iran’s Energy and Water Infrastructure if Talks Fail
Here are the latest updates from day 31 of war in Israel, the West Bank, the United States, Iran and the Middle East:
■ An Israeli soldier, Sgt. Liran Ben Zion, 19, was killed by Hezbollah anti-tank fire in southern Lebanon, and an officer was seriously wounded. Two additional Israeli soldiers were seriously wounded in separate incidents caused by anti-tank fire and a drone crash.
■ Sirens sounded across northern Israel, the Negev, and the West Bank amid missile and drone attacks by Iran and Lebanon. Shrapnel struck Haifa’s Bazan oil refinery, lightly wounding one person. Environmental activists warned that postponing the refinery’s evacuation, despite repeated attacks in under a year, poses a serious national safety risk.
■ An Israeli airstrike killed at least three people in Gaza, while Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian man near Hebron in the West Bank. Rights groups reported that Israeli settlers have attacked Palestinians amid restricted movement and delayed ambulance access.
■ The IDF stated that it had struck Hezbollah operatives disguised as paramedics who were transporting weapons. The army also called on residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs to evacuate their homes.
■ An Indonesian UN peacekeeper was killed and another was seriously wounded in an explosion at a UNIFIL position in southern Lebanon. The UN strongly condemned the incident and launched an investigation.
■ Lebanese media reported attacks on a school in the Tyre district. Four ambulances were also targeted in the village of Hanaway in southern Lebanon.
■ The Israeli Air Force struck 40 Iranian weapons production and research sites in Tehran, deploying more than 80 munitions. Iran confirmed the death of Revolutionary Guards Navy Commander Alireza Tangsiri following Israeli targeting.
■ Rockets hit an Iraqi air base near Baghdad airport, destroying an aircraft but causing no casualties. The Syrian army reported that drone attacks targeted bases near the Iraqi border, most of which were intercepted. Kuwait reported that it had intercepted five drones over areas under its protection.
■ Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi urged U.S. President Donald Trump to stop the war, stating that “no one else can.” Trump said that indirect talks with Iran are progressing and that a deal could be reached “fairly quickly,” while noting differences within his administration. Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for clarity on U.S. objectives in the war and urged de-escalation. The Iranian foreign ministry criticized negotiation proposals as “unrealistic, unreasonable, and excessive.”
■ Iran announced that its ambassador would remain in Beirut despite Lebanon revoking his accreditation and ordering him to leave.
■ Iran reported that electricity was fully restored in Tehran and Alborz provinces following overnight damage. The Iranian Red Crescent stated that more than 100,000 civilian buildings have been damaged or destroyed, including nearly 40,000 in Tehran, and that hundreds of schools and health centers were also hit. Iran additionally reported executing two men accused of opposition activity and plotting attacks.
■ Israel’s Health Ministry reported that over 6,000 people have been wounded since the war began, with hundreds treated in the past 24 hours.
■ Police arrested five demonstrators at an anti-budget protest near the Knesset in Jerusalem after forcibly dispersing the crowd.
