‘Weapons’ Prequel Sets Writers With Zach Shields Joining Zach Cregger
EXCLUSIVE: Zach Cregger and Zach Shields will write the screenplay for the upcoming prequel to the critically acclaimed horror hit Weapons. The New Line and Warner Bros. project’s current working title is Gladys.
Cregger and Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon are returning to produce. Cregger is repped by CAA, Artists First and Karl Austen and Michael Auerbach.
Weapons grossed over $270 million worldwide. Amy Madigan, who portrayed main antagonist Aunt Gladys, won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Madigan also won an Actor Award from SAG for her role as the mysterious relative of Alex (Cary Christopher).
“This is a woman who knows what she has to do, and she does it,” Madigan said of her character in an interview with Deadline before her Oscar win. “Now, granted, some of her methods might be a little unusual. But she has that, and I think all women in our business should have more of that confidence, myself included. So if I can take that away from it, I’ll say this is a win for Aunt Gladys and for me.”
Zach Shields most recently worked on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire for Warner Bros. and Legendary. Prior to that, he co‑wrote Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Krampus for Universal with Michael Dougherty.
In television, he most recently co‑executive produced Alma Har’el’s Lady in the Lake for Apple starring Natalie Portman. He also served as consulting producer on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters for Apple. Earlier this year, Shields’ play Dad’s Leg starring Rain Spencer, Emily Althaus and Ted Monte, ran at Los Angeles’ Hudson Theatre from Feb. 20 to March 2. The dark comedy watches two estranged sisters fight over their father’s soon-to-be-amputated leg while rehashing their past.
Shields is repped by Range Media Partners and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof and Fishman.
Cregger’s film adaptation of the video game Resident Evil is slated for release on September 18, 2026.
