Triple elimination! Here’s who was voted out Wednesday
Recapping Wednesday’s two-hour ‘Blood Moon’ episode of ‘Survivor 50.’
“This just in to the Survivor news room, it’s the merge!” Rick Devens said near the top of Wednesday’s episode of “Survivor 50,” putting on his best anchorman voice. “You’re gonna wanna stay tuned for what happens next!”
Thanks, Rick. With that said, here’s what happened on Wednesday’s surprise triple elimination (!) episode of “Survivor 50,” titled “The Blood Moon.” (Warning, plenty of spoilers ahead):
How is RizGod feeling?
Exclusive: ‘Survivor 50’ sneak peak reveals target before double exit
Ahead of a double elimination on Episode 5 of Season 50 of “Survivor,” Rizo Velovic suggests an alliance with Cirie Fields on the Cila tribe.
Pretty good, after he effectively eliminated Charlie Davis on last week’s episode. “I did everything I set out to do,” Rizo said, noting his newfound high standing among his tribemates. “All in all, Operation Bad Blood was a success.” Meanwhile, Jonathan was reeling after suddenly finding himself on the outs with his tribemates. “I am distraught,” he said. But wait, salvation was on its way in the form of…
The merge?
Yes, it was that most wonderful time of the “Survivor” season, when everyone drops their buffs and forms one tribe, which became a lift raft for some, a life raft with holes in it for others. Ozzy and Christian, previously foes, joined together and decided to trust one another heading into the merge. Meanwhile, RizGod was stoked to finally meet some of his “Survivor” heroes, chiefly Christian and Coach. “I’m here for the ride baby,” Rizo said, “so I am buckled in.”
Old Era vs. New Era
Cirie reflected on the various generations of players among the 17 remaining castaways, and how the style of play has evolved over the years. She called it “old era” vs. “new era”: the new schoolers have no problem aligning with their enemies for one vote just to advance themselves in the game, she said, while the OGs remain faithful to their core people right up to the very end. Given the evolution of the game, “I think that’s where the ‘old era’ thinking is going to have a problem,” she said.
Was it Ozzy’s lucky day?
Sort of. The castaways were sent scrambling into the woods to find what was promised to be a game-changing advantage in the game, and Ozzy was the first to find it, thinking he’d scored big. But had he? What he uncovered was a one way ticket to Exile Island, as well as a +1 for any player he wanted to bring along with him. Naturally, he chose Rizo. The RizMaster wasn’t sure if he was in for the adventure of a lifetime or the scariest night of his life, but either way, he was less than enthused. “This is terrible,” he decided.
What’s the ‘Blood Moon’ all about?
Introducing the immunity challenge, host Jeff Probst talked a lot about eclipses and a twist “so memorable, so rare, it will cause the entire ‘Survivor’ world to pause and take notice, because it has never happened before.” What it came down to was a challenge to win a feast from Applebee’s and, oh yeah, there would be a triple elimination at tribal council.
What’s new on the menu at Applebee’s?
Probst talked up some favorites on the menu — the Shark Bowl, the Bourbon Street Steak, the Whole Lotta Bacon Burger — before hyping the “Sizzlin’ Caramel Apple Pie,” which consists of “layers of hot cinnamon apple pie, a little bit of caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, served in a warm skillet.” Thanks Probst! The castaways later enjoyed their trip to their Neighborhood Grill + Bar, munching on all their faves and enjoying a few minutes of downtime from the game.
Who won immunity?
During the challenge — which involved standing on a series of increasingly small foot pegs — Christian, Stephanie and Dee won individual immunity, which kept them safe at the extra bloody tribal council, which was broken into three groups, each voting out one person. (So there was kind of still tribes after all?)
Who was voted out?
Kamilla Karthigesu, the 4th place finisher on “Survivor’s” 48th season, who at least took her elimination in the first of the evening’s three tribal councils in stride. “It was fun running around and lying to people, and honestly it was kind of fun getting lied to. It was fun being played,” she said, after getting voted out in a 3-2 vote over Chrissy Hofbeck.
Who else was voted out?
Genevieve Mushaluk, who tried protecting herself with a Shot in the Dark scroll — which offered her a one-in-six chance of erasing any votes cast her way — but came up on the losing end of its fate, and was unanimously voted out. “Sometimes luck is on your side, sometimes it’s not,” she reasoned. “I’m ready to transition back into being a fan and let everyone else play this crazy game.”
And lastly, who else-else was voted out?
Colby Donaldson, on an episode that aired on his birthday, of all days. (He’s 52.) He was nursing a bum foot which he injured during one of the challenges and he didn’t even have a vote — he lost it during an early challenge — so he was seen as a sitting duck in the game. The tribal council acted as a tender, reflective tribute to him, as well as Coach (who came packing ancient samurai proverbs, no less) and Cirie, “old era” players who paved the way for today’s young whipper snappers. Donaldson is pretty close to a “Survivor” OG — he was the runner-up in the show’s second season way back in 2001, and he has a classic cameo in an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — so there was a weight to his goodbye. “My heart is full, and I have nothing but appreciation, humility and gratitude for the opportunity to come back one more time,” he said during his farewell, choking back tears.
