The Red Wings lost to the Rangers, 4-1, at Madison Square Garden in a Saturday matinee in New York.
Gabe Perreault, who played two years for USA Hockey’s NTDP program in Plymouth, had a hat trick and goalie Jonathan Quick made 31 saves.
David Perron spoiled Quick’s bid for a shutout with a goal in the final minute of the third period and goalie John Gibson made 17 saves.
Detroit is still tied with Ottawa, Columbus and Philadelphia with 88 points but the Senators are in the final wild-card spot because of regulation wins.
How did the goals look without ABC on Comcast/Xfinity?
New York’s Jaroslav Chmelar opened the scoring at the 13:19 mark of the first period by tipping a shot past goalie John Gibson with assists to Vladislav Gavrikov and Adam Sykora.
Gabe Perreault scored on a wrist shot in the second period at 15:59 for a 2-0 lead with assists to Mika Zibanejad and Matthew Robertson.
Perreault scored his second goal of the game on a tap-in, power-play goal in the third period on a pass from Jonny Brodzinski at 7:13. He added his third goal of the game after Detroit pulled Gibson late in the game.
David Perron, who scored Detroit’s only goal late in the game, was robbed by Quick earlier in the game. Detroit has now lost three of the last four games heading into Sunday’s Easter matinee against the Wild.
How did the Senators do in the afternoon?
Ottawa lost, 4-1, to Minnesota as Olympic defenseman Jake Sanderson returned to the Senators’ lineup after missing 13 games with an injury.
The Senators and Red Wings have 88 points each but Ottawa is in the last wild-card position because of more regulation wins than Detroit.
Columbus can move to 90 points if they beat the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday evening.
Detroit lineup changes
Defenseman Justin Faulk was out of the lineup Saturday with a lower-body injury. Axel Sandin-Pellikka was called up from AHL Grand Rapids to replace Faulk, who was injured in Thursday’s 4-2 win in Philadelphia.
Following a nine-game absence, Michael Rasmussen replaced Mason Appleton. The 26-year-old Rasmussen has six goals, 14 points, 64 shots on net, 57 blocked shots and 62 hits in 61 games.

Red Wings without Faulk again
Defenseman Justin Faulk left Thursday’s game midway in the second period and didn’t return for the third because of a lower-body injury.
McLellan said after Friday’s practice Faulk was receiving treatment – Faulk didn’t practice – and McLellan was “hoping he’s going to be ready” for Saturday’s game against the Rangers.
Faulk will not play Saturday.
The Wings recalled Axel Sandin-Pellikka from Grand Rapids in time for Saturday’s game.

Griffins reach 100-point mark
The Grand Rapids Griffins hit the century-point mark for the first time since 2016-17 with a 6-3 victory over the Manitoba Moose on Friday at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The Griffins’ 101 points are the fifth-most in the team’s 30-year history, and 66-games played marks the fastest in franchise history the team has reached the century mark.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard was named the first star with the game-winning goal and an assist and Sebastian Cossa improved to 26-7-4 with a 29-save performance for the Griffins (48-13-4-1).
