Tennessee forward JP Estrella plans to enter NCAA transfer portal

Tennessee’s offseason roster movement continues. Sophomore forward JP Estrella plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Joe Tipton, marking another notable departure for Rick Barnes’ program following a deep postseason run. 

The portal officially opens April 7 and runs through April 21, with players not required to commit to a new school within that window. Estrella’s decision comes after a productive sophomore campaign in Knoxville.

The 6-foot-11 forward averaged 10.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists, emerging as a consistent contributor in Tennessee’s frontcourt. His development from a rotational piece into a reliable option highlighted both his growth and his potential, the same traits that made him a coveted recruit just years ago.

Coming out of Brewster Academy in the 2023 class, Estrella was a four-star prospect and ranked No. 36 overall in the On3 Consensus. He chose Tennessee over programs like Syracuse and Iowa, citing his relationship with Barnes and the staff as a major factor.

“I chose Tennessee because I have a great relationship with their whole staff,” Estrella said at the time, via On3’s Jamie Shaw. “Coach Barnes and the whole staff have a vision for me.”

That vision began to take shape this past season. Estrella’s versatility stood out. A mobile big with the ability to score on the block and step out to hit perimeter shots, he provided balance on both ends of the floor. His rebounding presence and defensive effort also made him a valuable piece for a Tennessee team that once again leaned on physicality and depth.

But now, he’ll look to take the next step elsewhere. Estrella becomes part of a growing list of Tennessee players exploring the portal this offseason. Freshman guard Clarence Massamba has already announced his intentions to transfer, while forward Cade Phillips is also expected to enter after an injury-shortened year. 

The movement reflects the evolving landscape of college basketball, where development and opportunity don’t always align long-term. For Estrella, the decision likely comes down to role and trajectory.

While he showed significant improvement as a sophomore, the chance to expand his role further, potentially as a featured frontcourt option, may have been a driving factor in his decision. And given his size, skill set and production, he’s expected to generate considerable interest.

Alas, there’s still plenty of upside. Estrella’s combination of length and offensive versatility fits the modern game, particularly as a stretch big who can impact both inside and out. With continued development, he has the tools to become a high-level contributor at his next stop. For Tennessee, it’s another piece to replace, but for Estrella, it’s a chance to build on what he started.
