Grand theft uh-oh: Luxury vehicle thieves botch Hells Kitchen heist, NYPD says
If this were “Grand Theft Auto,” then “mission failed” would be plastered across the game screen.
The NYPD says four people tried to steal multiple luxury vehicles from a Hell’s Kitchen parking garage Sunday morning. They got away … but at least some of the cars didn’t.
Right before 6 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a 911 call of a grand larceny auto in progress inside of the parking garage at 624 West 43rd St., police said.
Police said the four males entered the garage and attempted to steal three different cars. A parking attendant working at the location closed the garage door as the theft was taking place, police said.
Police said the individuals then used one of the stolen vehicles to ram through and exit the garage — but didn’t make it far with that car, crashing it into a street pole just a block away. Video of the scene posted on social media appeared to show a blue McLaren smashed up. The cars typically go for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The NYPD didn’t clarify what became of cars besides the one that crashed. But the thieves then fled in a gray BMW, police said. Images by CBS also show a white Range Rover stuck in the garage’s metal door.
Police said they don’t know where the group fled to and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Police also said there were no reported injuries.
According to NYPD data, grand larceny auto, or vehicle thefts, are down 3.6% through the first three months of the year compared to the same period last year.
Just last month, a similar but much more successful heist resulted in five luxury cars being stolen from a parking garage in Gowanus, Brooklyn. A group of thieves stole a Mercedes, a Range Rover and a couple of Audis during that Sunday morning heist.
