Since release, I’ve put 170 hours into Borderlands 4, which I would consider the best game in the series at this point. High praise, given that I’ve liked them all. So when something is bad, it has to be really bad for me to notice. And Borderlands 4 has just released what is literally the worst Halloween “event,” if you can call it that, I’ve ever seen.
The Horrors of Kairos event is…effectively nothing. The entire thing has been condensed into randomly appearing bubbles on the map, something that already appears in the base game. You go inside, kill an existing random boss, and that’s it. The “Halloween” aspect here is a red tint to things sometimes, and the fact that you then open a crate to try to get a Halloween grenade or assault rifle. The boss won’t even actually drop it on the ground.
In the context of the game, this is ridiculous. These bubbles are almost impossible to predict where and when they will spawn, and you can drive around forever and not see one. Occasionally, there will be a little triangle on your map to show you, but those are few and far between. Then, if you do find them, you kill a dome boss in an identical way to what you’ve done the entire rest of the game. Maybe you get one of two (actually awful) pieces of Halloween loot with a low drop rate chance.
I will put this in Destiny terms for my normal readers. It’s like if the entire Halloween event was an unmarked public event you had to drive around to find. But it’s not even a public event; it’s just killing the boss of a public event in 2-20 seconds or so. If you’re lucky, there’s a 5% chance a bad Halloween-specific weapon will go to your postmaster. Players would be losing their minds.
All of this is made worse by the fact that Borderlands 3 had a legitimately fun Halloween event with a special zone, a new boss and good loot. It was an actual event. This is using a frustrating, randomized event with zero changes and SHIFT codes to get whatever cosmetics it’s doling out. Embarrassing.
If you are going to do a holiday event at all, you need to make it something that is not going to show a complete lack of effort to your fans. It’s almost insulting that they thought anyone would enjoy this. It’s just the complete polar opposite of the rest of the game, where obviously tons of work went into making it substantive and fun. Whatever…this is, should never happen again.
BONUS: If you do actually want to farm this, there is a place where one bubble will spawn consistently. It’s behind a waterfall in Terminus Range here.
Then you go inside, go to the back of the room, wait, and a bubble will spawn every few minutes or so. This is still awful, but at least you’re not driving around aimlessly.
