MediaTek may have conceded its plans to bring only a single chipset to its Dimensity 9600 lineup because a new rumor claims a ‘Pro’ version will arrive later this year, likely as a direct counter to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. Like its closest rival, a tipster states that the SoC is bringing desktop-level performance with a target frequency of 5.00GHz and a new CPU cluster. The only catch is that MediaTek has yet to find a way to cool it properly.
New target frequency for the Dimensity 9600 Pro may only be in short bursts, as overheating problems plague the chipset, despite the move to 2nm
Unlike the Dimensity 9500, which relied on a single high-performance core, the Dimensity 9600 Pro is expected to utilize two of these ‘super cores’ to enable increased single-core and multi-core performance. According to Weibo’s Digital Chat Station, this specifications change will enable the silicon to flaunt desktop-level performance but at the expense of increased temperatures.
Unlike desktop computers, which rely on tall, beefy heatsinks to maintain peak performance and dissipate heat effectively, smartphones equipped with the Dimensity 9600 Pro can only ship with a vapor chamber, paired with extras like liquid cooling or even an active fan, if manufacturers really want to go overboard.
Even then, the thermals cannot be controlled, which will ultimately force the Dimensity 9600 Pro to throttle down to a more acceptable 4.00-4.20GHz clock speed range. Given that MediaTek is expected to rely on ARM’s CPU designs instead of any in-house solution like Qualcomm’s Oryon cores, these might be more inefficient, resulting in faster thermal throttling.
Then again, the improved attributes thanks to moving to TSMC’s 2nm ‘N2P’ technology could give MediaTek the thermal headroom it needs to reach those high clock speeds with the Dimensity 9600 Pro. We previously reported that the latter will sport a ‘2 + 3 + 3’ CPU cluster, making it the first time that MediaTek will adopt this configuration.
This ‘Pro’ variant may also be accompanied by a standard version with slightly less aggressive clock speeds, but we’ll get to know this information in the near future. For now, remember to check out our detailed roundup to stay ‘up to date.’
