Lamar Odom Disputes Khloé Kardashian’s Claim About 2015 Overdose
This post discusses drug misuse.
If you’re wondering why everyone is suddenly talking about Lamar Odom again, it’ll be because of a new buzzy documentary that came out on Netflix last week.
Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom tracks the highs and lows of Lamar’s NBA career and personal life, with a focus on his drug addiction — namely, that near-fatal overdose at a Nevada brothel in 2015.
Someone who played a huge role in Lamar’s life during this time was Khloé Kardashian, whom he married in 2009, about a month after they met.
Though their marriage seemed happy through the lens of reality TV cameras, Lamar was struggling with addiction, and as the Netflix documentary tracks, it was Khloé who had to pick up the pieces, even after they broke up in 2013.
Describing herself as “an enabler without knowing [she] was an enabler,” Khloé said in the new doc: “I was either looking for him in alleys, looking for him in motels. He would have tinfoil cutouts or spoons, and freebasing things, and leaving things everywhere. I remember needing to go to hotel rooms to clean up after him, so the housekeeping didn’t sell a story.”
Khloé had already filed for divorce from Lamar when he overdosed on cocaine, alcohol, and cannabis in a Las Vegas brothel on Oct. 13, 2015. As well as ruptured kidneys and a collapsed lung, Lamar suffered six heart attacks and 12 strokes while he was in a coma for three days.
When Lamar eventually woke up, it was Khloé who remained by his side throughout his four-month recovery, helping him learn how to walk and talk again. This is all depicted in the Netflix documentary. However, Lamar has come out to dispute some of the claims — including the suggestion that it was Khloé who saved his life.
In response, Lamar said: “In some ways. God saved my life. My lord saved my life, honestly… She took care of me, but God took care of me the most. What I came back from is like a medical miracle.”
Elsewhere in the doc, Khloé told a story about how Lamar’s father, Joe Odom, apparently wanted his son taken off life support in the aftermath of the overdose. “We get to the hospital,” Khloé claimed. “His dad was there. I assume, [he] thought he’s now the beneficiary to Lamar. And Joe just said, ‘Don’t put him on life support. Turn those machines off.’”
This line from the documentary went pretty viral, prompting people to, again, credit Khloé with saving Lamar’s life. However, Lamar has questioned this story about his father, saying: “I just can’t see him ever, ever doing that.”
“You know, I was knocked out and asleep at that time,” Lamar explained during his Today appearance. “If you know Joe Odom, I don’t think that’s something that would ever come out of his mouth. He was my biggest fan. I don’t know where that got mistranslated.”
For what it’s worth, Khloé and Lamar do not have a close relationship today. They finalized their divorce in 2016 after Khloé found him using drugs again, and, after that, they went nine years without speaking.
Their first conversation in nearly a decade was caught on camera for The Kardashians in 2025, and Khloé has since described the on-camera reunion as “sad” and “emotionally draining.” When asked about the meeting on Today, Lamar agreed that it was “awkward.”
“It wasn’t really good for me, but once you family, you always family, so she ain’t going nowhere,” he said. “I will always have love for her, but being in love? No.”
