ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. (SC) — 20 people were injured and four where pronounced dead on the scene of a shooting at a bar and grill in Beaufort County early Sunday, according to local law enforcement.
Around 1 a.m., deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office were called to Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island in response to multiple reports of a shooting, the sheriff’s office announced later Sunday morning. Once on scene, deputies learned that hundreds of people were at the location when the shooting occurred and several had been shot.
Some victims were transported by EMS while others started arriving at area hospitals seeking medical attention, BCSO said. In all, at least 20 people were injured in the gunfire. Four were transported in critical condition, and four were pronounced dead on the scene. BCSO said the names of the victims will not be released at this time, but the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office may release more information upon notification to next of kin.
“This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.”
The circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation, according to deputies, and the sheriff’s office has persons of interest.
