Renegades’ Is Surprisingly Good For New Players
At least to a certain extent, Bungie’s idea to do a Star Wars expansion, Renegades, may work on some players. I’ve heard some amount of players saying they’re either thinking of returning to the game, or their general interest in Star Wars is enough to pique their curiosity. The questions, however, are…is it worth it? What did I miss? Do I need to catch up?
I didn’t really think about this until recently, but I think the answer to the last question is no. Renegades, I believe, can serve as new player onboarding in a way we haven’t seen for a while, as strange as that may sound for the zillionth expansion in an eleven year long series.
I do not believe the current “free trial” version of Destiny 2 is good onboarding, and I think most players would agree with that. The Shaw Han mini-questline, taking you through a tutorial may be mechanically useful, but I do not believe it is a good way to grab new players who may realize that gunplay feels nice, but it’s all terribly dull.
You know what’s not dull? Being thrown onto a Cabal Star Destroyer, fighting (and piloting) AT-STs and getting a lightsaber. To me, this is going to be more engaging than most onramps to Destiny that currently exist, and less daunting than the “well you start at Shadowkeep” or “well you start at Witch Queen” (usually my advice).

To a certain extent, trying to follow along with Destiny’s story for new players is not going to be worth the trouble. Even if you play the expansions, the game has cut out the entire first two years of the game and about 20 seasons and episodes full of story developments. You’re going to have to watch a Byf video regardless.
I don’t think you need to know more than the fact that there’s a creepy witch lady dating a smooth-talking scoundrel with a little alien nerd in tow. A main focus of the expansion is on two new characters, even current Destiny players have never seen before, the Jedi-like Aunor and the Sith-like Dredgen Bael. We are in the second expansion of an entirely new era of Destiny, and it’s not like starting from Edge of Fate was some great catch-up for Destiny either.
Being fully geared or powered up doesn’t matter all that much either. Playing on normal, you can kill whatever you need to kill in these campaigns. Plus, you are going to be getting a full set of new weapons and new armor (that veteran players will also be getting for the first time) and using those almost immediately. You can balance this with the onboard quest to get more subclass stuff and a couple exotics, but the point is, you can just play, you’re not going to be horribly underpowered or anything.
To sum up:
- Star Wars-ish stuff is cooler than the boring Destiny onboard system, even if that’s free. It might actually turn you off.
- There is little hope of catching up on the entire story of Destiny, so this is as good a place to hop in as any, really.
- You will gear up quickly and can easily get through the campaign or lower difficulties of post-story activities (and sigh, The Portal).
If the game hooks you, then you can really dive into the systems and past expansions and all that. I do believe the gameplay of Destiny alone can carry your introduction, no matter where you’re starting.
I could be wrong, as I am obviously the furthest thing from a new player, but honestly, I’d say screw it and jump in (or jump back in) with Renegades. It’s out tomorrow.
