Mother of freed hostage Alon Ohel calls for unity and healing in emotional speech
Idit Ohel, the mother of recently freed Israeli hostage Alon Ohel, expressed profound gratitude and called on Israelis to transform the nation’s unity and hope into lasting change.
Alon Ohel, who was abducted by Hamas from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, was released earlier this week after 737 days in captivity. During his ordeal, he suffered severe injuries, including the loss of vision in one eye.
Speaking through tears from Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, Israel, Idit conveyed a message from her son:
Idit detailed Alon’s ongoing recovery, revealing that he was stitched in captivity in an “amateur way” and still endures pain from shrapnel. Doctors at the medical center are optimistic that surgery may partially restore vision in his damaged eye.
Idit credited the hostage release deal with saving her son’s life, extending thanks to Israeli security forces, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, international mediators including US President Donald Trump, and leaders from Germany and Serbia for their roles in the negotiations.
In a closing message, Idit urged Israelis to preserve the spirit of unity forged during the ordeal: “The entire nation was united behind the joy on the returns, and our job is to extend this time go beyond to daily fight that brought us to down, to stop the hatred, the victimizing, the revenge, and go on a journey of unity and rebuilding.”
