Quarterback Bryce Underwood ran for a touchdown in East Lansing and helped lead the Michigan Wolverines to a 31-20 victory over Michigan State. He has now played in all eight games this season, along with fellow true freshman wide receiver Andrew Marsh.
This week, wide receiver Jamar Browder played in his fifth game of the season, officially burning his redshirt. On the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Shamari Earls and linebacker Chase Taylor also participated in their fifth game of the year, burning their redshirts in the process.
Here are the freshmen who have seen playing time so far this season. An asterisk (*) indicates they saw playing time against Michigan State:
Underwood didn’t have the best night, completing just 8-of-17 passes for 86 yards while also taking a sack. On the ground, he managed 26 yards and a touchdown on five carries. He found Marsh three times for 54 yards. Marsh led the team in receiving yards and had an impressive 27-yard catch where he fought for some extra yards.
Defensive back Elijah Dotson ended the night with two tackles, while the aforementioned Earls burned his redshirt in this one, and he also got burned by a penalty in the fourth quarter. It kept the drive alive for the Spartans, eventually leading to their final score of the night. In the end, it’s likely a good learning opportunity for Earls — he’s clearly a young player this coaching staff wants to see more of this season.
While Browder and Taylor both burned their redshirts, neither of them collected any stats in the game. Browder played in just one snap, while Taylor was on special teams duty on Saturday.
The Wolverines are set to take on Purdue in another night game next week. At this point in the season, it seems like the team is settling into a rhythm with the freshmen they trust, but we could see more of them next week. The Boilermakers are 2-6 this season, and while they’ve got a good head coach in Barry Odom, they are at the bottom of the Big Ten and riding a six-game losing streak.
