4-year-old Ogden girl dies after complications from influenza

OGDEN, Utah (KUTV) — An Ogden family is grieving the loss of their 4-year-old daughter, Elora “Ellie” Ann Rudd, who died after complications from influenza on Jan. 6.

Family members said Ellie was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital, where doctors discovered she had the flu and adenovirus. After staying overnight, her condition worsened, and she developed pneumonia and sepsis.

She was life-flighted to Primary Children’s Hospital, where she later died from complications caused by blood clots in her heart and a lack of blood flow to her brain.

Her parents, Sarah and Michael Rudd, are now facing medical bills and funeral expenses following the sudden loss. A GoFundMe page created by the family describes Ellie as “beautiful, sweet and spunky,” adding that she passed quickly after putting up a strong fight.

Funeral services are planned for Jan. 16 in Ogden.

The family thanked the community for its support, saying they are grateful for the love shown and for helping keep Ellie’s memory alive.

Her death comes as flu activity remains elevated nationwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency estimates at least 15 million flu illnesses, 180,000 hospitalizations, and 7,400 deaths so far this season, with children among those being hit hardest.

Currently, Utah’s Influenza reports are low compared to the rest of the nation, though Weber County is a hotspot.
