49ers’ Keion White undergoes successful surgery after being shot in ankle, team says
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story stated the shooting happened at a Super Bowl event. It is unclear if the event was related to the Super Bowl.
San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White, who was shot in the ankle during an early-morning event in San Francisco on Monday, underwent successful surgery in the afternoon, according to the team.
White was shot at 4:06 a.m. on the 17th block of Mission Street, according to Evan Sernoffsky, a San Francisco Police Department spokesman. Sernoffsky said there was an altercation inside a business between two groups at the event, but White is not believed to have been involved in the altercation. After the shooting, he was taken by police to a nearby hospital.
“Our officers are working diligently on this investigation,” Sernoffsky said, “and we’re following multiple leads.”
The 49ers issued a statement around 4:30 p.m., saying “Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco.”
Sernoffsky said there were no other victims and that no arrests have been made. He said he didn’t know whether the event was related to Super Bowl 60, which was held in Santa Clara hours earlier and featured White’s former team, the New England Patriots. White, 27, was traded to the 49ers on Oct. 29.
Photos from White’s Instagram showed he was in the stands at the Super Bowl between the Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night, wearing a Patriots hat.
White is the second 49er to be shot in the last year and a half.
Receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot through the chest during a robbery attempt on the intersection of Geary Street and Grant Avenue on Aug. 31, 2024. A 17-year-old, who allegedly was trying to steal Pearsall’s Rolex watch, was shot in the arm during the altercation and later arrested. The bullet passed through Pearsall’s torso without hitting any vital organs, and he made a full recovery.
The Patriots drafted White in the second round in 2023. He appeared in nine games for the 49ers this season, starting two, finishing with 1.5 sacks and six quarterback hits.
