49ers News: Welcome BACK to the Bay, Dre!
49ers reunite with Dre Greenlaw, add linebacker on 1-year, $7.5 million deal (paywall)
“There are asterisks to this reunion. Greenlaw’s recent injury history is well-documented. And the one-year deal — plus Martin’s concussion issue — means the position has question marks beyond this season. Still, the 49ers brought back a player who is a favorite of coaches, players and fans on what might end up looking like a sweetheart deal.”
With Denver, however, Greenlaw did flash his familiar form for the 324 snaps he was on the field last season. He had 43 tackles and an interception and graded out among the top 20 among 88 qualifying linebackers in run defense (19th) and pass coverage (13th), according to Pro Football Focus.”
Purdy’s presence also played a role, even going back to when he was still just “Mr. Irrelevant.” His first start in the NFL took place opposite Evans and the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers in 2022. The 49ers won 35-7 as Purdy completed 76.2% percent of his passes with two touchdowns and zero picks.
Evans remembered the potential. And then had a scary thought. Not so scary for the Niners, but for other teams.
“His first start was against my Buccaneers back in 2022, and I saw right then and there that if I played with him, I feel like I can help him out a lot,” Evans said. “And he’s already a really good player. I hope I can help him get to where he wants to go in his career, and that’s to be a Super Bowl champion, potential MVP.”
