- The Rivian R2 will go on sale this spring with the top-tier Performance trim.
- It costs $57,990 to start and features two electric motors that make 656 horsepower.
- The entry-level R2 at $45,000 will not go on sale until late 2027.
When Rivian revealed the R2 a year ago, it said the new electric SUV would start at $45,000. That’s still true, but that entry-level variant isn’t going on sale until late 2027. Instead, Rivian will start selling the top-tier R2 Performance first, which goes on sale as soon as this spring.
The R2 Performance costs $57,990 to start and features two electric motors and all-wheel drive, making 656 horsepower. Rivian claims the model will hit 60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds and offer an estimated range of over 300 miles.
Twenty-one-inch Sport wheels, semi-active suspension, tow hooks, and yellow brake calipers and accents are standard. Options include 20-inch Adventure wheels, a spare tire, and a tow package. There’s also a Launch Package, available for a limited time, that includes a special key fob, the tow pack, and the option of the Launch Green paint.
| Trim | Price | Availability |
| Rivian R2 Standard | $45,000 | Late 2027 |
| Rivian R2 Standard Long Range | $47,990 | First Half 2027 |
| Rivian R2 Premium | $53,990 | Early 2027 |
| Rivian R2 Performance | $57,990 | Spring 2026 |
Going on sale after the R2 Performance will be the R2 Premium, the mid-grade option, which arrives in early 2027 and starts at $53,990. It has two motors making 500 horsepower, with a 4.9-second 0-60 time. It offers many of the same features as the Performance but lacks the semi-active suspension option, and it comes standard with 20-inch wheels.
Rivian will offer the R2 Standard in two variants. The Long Range version will arrive sometime in the first half of 2027, with a starting price of $47,900. Its single motor powers the rear wheels and delivers 350 hp, giving the SUV a 5.9-second 0-60 time and over 320 miles of range. Nineteen-inch wheels are standard, with 20-inch wheels optional, along with all-wheel drive.
The $45,000 R2 Standard won’t hit the market until late 2027, according to Rivian. It will have a single motor powering the rear wheels while offering more than 265 miles of range.
Measured Up
The Rivian R2 measures 66.9 inches tall, 84.7 inches wide (with mirrors), and 185.9 inches long. It’s shorter than a Bronco Sport in height and about three inches shorter in length than the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.
The R2 has 9.6 inches of ground clearance, 0.1 inches less than the Wrangler Unlimited Sport. It has a 25-degree approach angle, a 26-degree departure angle, and a 20.6 breakover angle.
Inside, the R2 will swallow up to 90.1 cubic feet of cargo, with 28.7 cu ft available behind the rear seats.
Motor1’s Take: The R2 is a vital vehicle for Rivian, serving as the entry point, but the cheapest version won’t go on sale for over a year. Thankfully, the R2 Performance isn’t ridiculously priced, while still offering a considerable amount of power for just under $60,000.
