If it wasn’t already clear that Marc Benioff has moved closer to President Donald Trump — after echoing his calls to send troops into San Francisco — the Salesforce CEO now wants his company to help power the president’s mass deportation campaign.
Screenshots of internal documents and communications obtained by the New York Times show how Benioff pitched ICE on rapidly hiring 10,000 new agents and enhancing deportation operations using Salesforce AI tech.
Materials included a five-page memo, a spreadsheet of potential “opportunities” to work with ICE, and slides brainstorming how AI could help ICE process tip-line data and investigations. Salesforce did not dispute the authenticity of the documents but declined to comment in detail, citing confidentiality around contracts, according to the Times report published Thursday night.
The revelation is likely to send more shock waves across the San Francisco liberal establishment, which was largely appalled by Benioff’s earlier calls to send National Guard troops to help “clean up” the city of crime, drugs and homelessness. Benioff declined to address those remarks during this week’s Dreamforce conference, which drew nearly 50,000 tech workers and wrapped up Thursday at Moscone Center.
Salesforce’s largest customer is the U.S. government, and the U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard and Veterans Affairs Administration, among others, use Salesforce products.
Salesforce has worked with ICE in the past, under the Obama and Biden administrations — but its proposal to help ICE expand its enforcement capacity is a new development.
Benioff has been a big booster for San Francisco, spending billions in the city, including $15 billion he said he’s prepared to invest over the next five years. And on Thursday, he announced he’d give the San Francisco Police Department $1 million.
