The Detroit Lions are signing star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a four-year contract extension, per his agent Mike McCartney.
Hutchinson’s deal is worth $180 million, including $141 million guaranteed, according to McCartney. The guaranteed money is the most-ever for a non-quarterback.

Hutchinson, 25, was drafted second by the Lions in 2022 out of Michigan. Since entering the league, Hutchinson has recorded 34.5 sacks and earned Pro-Bowl honors in 2022, en route to an 11.5-sack season. He’s a true homegrown talent and one of the faces of this franchise.
During the 2024 season, Hutchinson elevated his game to new levels. He was leading the league in sacks (7.5), pressures (45) and pass-rush win rate (38.3) through the first six weeks of the season — by a wide margin. Hutchinson was on a torrid pace, looking like the early frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year until he suffered a broken tibia and fibula vs. the Cowboys in Week 6. It abruptly ended what could’ve been a special season for Hutchinson, who had finally joined the ranks of the NFL’s elite pass rushers.
Hutchinson’s injury, however, didn’t affect the Lions’ long-term plans for him. At the combine in February, Lions general manager Brad Holmes revealed to reporters that the team was in talks with Hutchinson about signing him to an extension. Holmes has pointed to Hutchinson whenever he’s been asked about acquiring a star pass rusher on the trade market, knowing the Lions have to pay their own guy. He’s been one of their top priorities, so this deal was long-anticipated.
“We’ll definitely get some dialogue going soon,” Holmes told Detroit’s 97.1 The Ticket this summer. “All those things take time — especially the larger the deal is. … He’s looked great. … What he’s showing in practice, I mean, the change of direction, the explosiveness, he’s not having any effects. I’m not surprised when a guy like him has this kind of mindset. But it’s very important. Hopefully, soon we’ll get some kind of dialogue going.”

If there were any hesitations about Hutchinson’s injury, they were quickly put to rest in training camp. Hutchinson was a practice wrecker when the team returned to its Allen Park, Mich., facility. Hutchinson’s tremendous summer has carried over into the season, and he’s had no trouble picking up where he left off. He leads all edge rushers in pressures (48), ranks third in pass-rush win rate (25.2 percent) and is tied for seventh in sacks with six.
With the Lions having seen everything they needed to, it seemed like only a matter of time before the two sides reached an agreement. The Lions have done well to extend their core players early to avoid drama. They’ve done so with QB Jared Goff, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, OTs Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker, DT Alim McNeill, RB David Montgomery, S Kerby Joseph and WR Jameson Williams, among others — with more on the way. No need to delay the inevitable for a player of Hutchinson’s caliber.
