Al Khelaifi: “If anyone says or thinks that Perez has ‘lost’ today, they are stupid”
Paris Saint-Germain president and European Club Association (ECA) chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi spoke to Marca today following the agreement reached between UEFA and Real Madrid regarding the Super League situation.
Al-Khelaifi expressed satisfaction with the outcome and emphasized unity among European football’s major institutions and clubs moving forward.
“The most important thing here is that we all win, nobody loses”
“I am proud and very happy. I want to thank everyone, all the parties involved in this historic agreement. To the UEFA president, who does so much every day for European football, the most intelligent and humble leader. And, of course, to Florentino Pérez, a very elegant and intelligent man, a visionary, someone who is always trying to push things forward, to improve them. And if anyone says or thinks that he has ‘lost’ today, they are stupid and know absolutely nothing about football. The most important thing here is that we all win, nobody loses. Football wins, which is what we all wanted, it was the goal we all set for ourselves for the good of football and its fans. Today UEFA wins, Real Madrid wins, the EFC (European Club Association, which he chairs) wins, and most importantly, he wins. The war was getting us nowhere, and now nobody loses,”
Praise for Florentino Pérez and the negotiation process
“I believe that today President Pérez is an even greater and better person, as he has led Real Madrid to do what is most beneficial for European football. Thank you very much, truly, and I appreciate him placing his trust in me. I also want to thank Chelsea, especially Behdad Eghbali, who has been with me from the beginning of this negotiation.”
Recognition for Joan Laporta and Barcelona’s role
“President Laporta has shown great courage and leadership, and he also deserves great recognition. In today’s final agreement, dialogue always triumphs over division. I’ve believed in this peace process for a long time, but just this morning we didn’t know if it would happen or not. We’ve been talking, with our differences, but always with the will to reach an agreement, always thinking about the collective interests and finding common ground.”
Looking ahead to a new chapter in European club football
“Barcelona’s return to the EFC family is fantastic news. Now we’re working to bring Real Madrid back in full, as we all begin a new and bright chapter for club football.”
