The arrival of the foldable iPhone and a low-cost version in the future means that Apple will eventually add more members to its lineup, indicating a change in the launch strategy as the technology giant aims to offer a diversified range of handsets for a multitude of customers around the world. However, as far as the name change goes for 2027, a senior researcher says that we will not witness an iPhone X-like release two years from now, with Apple sticking with the iPhone 20 name by skipping an entire number.
As for the 2027 iPhone launch strategy, the iPhone 18e and base iPhone 20 are expected to arrive in the first half, followed by the more premium models later in the year
At a conference held in South Korea, Omdia’s senior researcher, Heo Moo-yeol, stated that Apple will introduce six new iPhone models in 2027. Instead of referring to the lineup as ‘iPhone 19,’ the company will adopt the iPhone 20 name to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series. Unfortunately, the senior researcher did not explain why Apple would make the name change, but the aforementioned reason appears to be the more logical explanation.
Details from Omdia, spotted by ETNews, indicate that Apple’s adjustment to its iPhone launch strategy in 2027 will result in a demand decline for OLED panels by approximately 20 million units, which will be terrible news for the company’s suppliers. Heo Moo-yeol’s predictions are partially aligned with Daishin Securities analyst Park Kang-ho, who also said that Apple will launch six new models in 2027.
Omdia’s senior researcher says that iPhone panel shipments can rebound, with total annual shipments reaching 250 million units if Apple’s strategy of launching two foldable iPhone models in succession gains some momentum. Strangely, the same individual has stated that we will continue to see the ‘Air’ variant, despite Apple’s production forecast being reduced by one million units due to poor sales, with one tipster suggesting that the iPhone Air will be canceled.
Making predictions was never downplayed in the industry, and looking at the way Apple’s head is leaning regarding its current iPhone lineup, not to mention the heated competition, it will be an excellent idea to introduce more models that cater to several price brackets instead of occupying just the premium space. In this manner, Apple has the opportunity to drive more shipments in a calendar year and outpace the competition.
