The emulation scene continues to amaze me, and today, we have a brand new emulator to try out and enjoy! ARMSX2 is a brand new PS2 emulator that can be used on Android devices, and while it has been available for testing, the new program has officially been released, going into version 1.0 today, and commemorating the announcement with their move to being open source.
While SteamDeckHQ does support emulation and preservation, we do NOT support piracy. All games being tested are dumped from legally purchased games of ours. We will never link to any websites or sources to download any ROMs.
Currently, emulating PS2 games on Android devices has been possible, but there haven’t been many updates. The most popular emulator for Android, NetherSX2, had not been in development for years, after the dev moved away from the scene. We do have AetherSX2, but ARMSX2 has some intriguing ideas to it. There are no open-source PS2 emulators for Android, which is a reason that development began with GitHub users MoonPower and jpolo1224 taking the reins from a PCSX2 fork.
The goal of this emulator is to have version parity with PCSX2, the most popular PS2 emulator on PC, and I look forward to seeing this happen. The emulator currently translates from x86 to arm64 format, so performance may not be as good as the older NetherSX2 or AetherSX2, but it’s still a work in progress and subject to change. However, it is the only PS2 emulator for Android to have an open-source version, which means development is only going to get better and better as other people can suggest features, fixes, and improvements.
With the 1.0 release, there will also be a Google Play store listing that goes up, but according to the announcement over on their Discord server, it has been postponed to later this week, due to Google needing additional time to review the app.
I am looking forward to seeing how development continues, and exactly what it will look like as others can now see everything that is going on under the hood. I commend the team for following through with this, since open source can lead to many beneficial improvements with full transparency from the team, and it’s something I very much respect. I hope we see some future performance improvements as well, hopefully moving from x86 translation to native ARM.
