Now, the mom tells PEOPLE she believes her daughter has chimerism
Ashlee Black always knew her daughter was special, but didn’t know exactly how special.
The 36-year-old tells PEOPLE it wasn’t until her daughter, Valyn, was 4 weeks old that she noticed the little one had “different colors of eyes and hair.”
In December 2025, the proud mom of nine shared a TikTok video of her daughter smiling in her crib, which went viral, amassing over 2.7 million views.
“This sweet baby girl has heterochromia of the eyes and hair, plus 2 different skin colors. Could she have chimerism?” she captioned the clip.
Chimerism is a rare condition in which a single individual possesses at least two distinct sets of DNA, which can lead to different colored eyes, differing skin tones in small patches and spots of different colored or textured hair.

“What I’ve learned from sharing Valyn’s video is that having all three different color eyes, hair and skin is very rare, and others also believe she may have chimerism,” Black shares. “Her right side has her dark eye with dark, straight and thick hair, where her left side has her light eye, with light, thin, curly hair.”
“I decided to do the video because I was curious who else was born that way, and on an honest note, I wanted everyone to see my beautiful baby that God blessed me with,” she adds.
While Black is in awe of her baby’s beauty, she notes that her journey to welcoming Valyn was extremely difficult.
Black tells PEOPLE that she found out she was pregnant at five weeks and doctors initially told her that the “gestational sac was too low and the fetal heart rate was also too low,” so she was “going to miscarry.”
She was “heartbroken,” but two weeks later, she went in for another ultrasound.
“They informed me that her heart rate had increased some but I had a rare cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy (where the sac was growing into my uterine scar instead of up into my uterus),” she explains. “They told me I needed to terminate the pregnancy ASAP and sent me to a specialist.”
A cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy is extremely rare and occurs when “an early pregnancy implants in the scar from a previous cesarean delivery,” per the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“I went to meet with them and they informed me of how life-threatening this is for me because it’s a very high chance of uterine rupture and hemorrhaging, causing fetal and maternal death,” she says.
“Even knowing all this information, both me and my husband felt the presence of God telling us to have faith,” she continues. “I denied termination and we went back for weekly ultrasounds, with every ultrasound showing worse results and them stressing for me to reconsider termination.”
When they went in for her 12-week ultrasound, doctors discovered that her daughter was growing into her uterus instead of toward her bladder, and “was doing wonderful.” However, the ultrasound also revealed that she “had placenta accreta and placenta previa.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, placenta previa “is a problem during pregnancy when the placenta completely or partially covers the opening of the uterus,” rather than attaching at the top or on the side of the uterus. Meanwhile, placenta accreta is a “serious pregnancy condition that occurs when the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall,” meaning “part or all of the placenta remains attached” after childbirth.
“Valyn’s placenta grew through my uterus and attached to other organs like my bladder. I was hospitalized for two months before delivery because I was having so much bleeding and was at such a high risk for fetal and maternal death, with an even higher risk of death during delivery because of the amount of blood loss that can happen when you have placenta percreta,” she shares.
With help from her “amazing” team of doctors, her daughter “was born at 34 weeks just as perfect as can be.”

“The name Valyn means healthy, strong and valiant,” Black shares. “She is a beautiful and unique little girl, created to stand out and born with such a wonderful purpose. We’re beyond blessed.”
According to Black, Valyn is the “happiest baby.” She smiles and laughs from “the time she wakes up, until the time she goes to sleep.”
“She loves everyone she’s ever met and greets them with the cutest little smile. She enjoys playing with her other siblings and crawling after them through the house. But she can also play alone and be just as happy,” Black shares.
