Hocus Pocus 2 focused on the worst parts of the first movie. Having them come back literally singing and dancing was absurd. The dance sequence in the first one had a plot purpose and only Sarah sang otherwise – again, for a plot purpose. To turn the actually scary witches from the first one into a bad cabaret act in the second was such a tone-deaf choice.

The first movie holds up because it actually took the threats seriously, and fantastic make-up and practical effects. The second one was literally shot – and reshot – against a static background for five minutes. Winifred whinging on about her deep love for her dead (again again) sisters made no sense – honestly, I can’t even remember WTF because I couldn’t watch it more than once.

The costumes looked cheaper than some fans’ homemade versions. And the dreadful Disney-required prologue showing all of them as tweens was so, so bad. Hannah Waddingham having fake rhinestones glued to her face in the 1600s – or whenever – was absolutely ridiculous. (No shade to Hannah or the little girls – their performances weren’t the problem, it was a conceptual issue.)

I can only remember one line from the sequel and it was the joke about how convenient it was that babies now come in jars. ONE LINE. I can quote at least half of the original.
