Bill Belichick was inches away from delivering his first signature win at Chapel Hill.

A double-digit home underdog to No. 16 Virginia, North Carolina pushed the Cavaliers to overtime and Belichick got aggressive. After trading touchdowns, the Tar Heels coach opted to go for a two-point conversion in hopes of a walk-off win.

On the try, quarterback Gio Lopez rolled to his right and completed a pass to Davion Gause, but as the running back dove for the pylon, he was tackled just shy of the goal line. The play was so close that the end of the game was delayed for an official review, but ultimately the call of the field was upheld, and North Carolina lost, 17-16.

With the defeat, Belichick’s Tar Heels fell to 2-5 on the season. They’re still searching for their first win against a Power Four opponent.
