With Week 9 now firmly in the books, the college football world is set to turn the calendar to November. Before doing that, however, analyst Joey Galloway took a look at the college football landscape and shared his rankings for the five best teams this season.
In his ranking, Galloway ended up pulling all five teams from just two conferences. That’s the SEC and the Big Ten. Perhaps that shouldn’t be an overwhelming surprise, though, as both conferences are likely to get multiple teams into the College Football Playoff this season. Still, in the future, it’s very possible the ACC or Big 12 crack this list.
Galloway would reveal his rankings on his show Nonstop with Kirk Herbstreit. You can see the Top 5 rankings he put together here.
In line with the current AP Poll, Joey Galloway has Ohio State sitting atop his rankings. That’s perhaps no surprise, even coming off a bye week. After all, the Buckeyes have been absolutely dominant this season, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.
Now, Ohio State controls its own destiny. Win out and the Buckeyes are going to go to the Big Ten Championship Game. That would also, almost certainly, put Ohio State in the College Football Playoff, looking to repeat as national champions.
The Alabama Crimson Tide got a scare in Week 9. That didn’t cost them in the rankings that Galloway put out, though. That’s probably fair given that the Crimson Tide have been dominant, and have been dominant against some of the highest-ranked teams in the country, since their Week 1 loss.
To this point, Alabama hasn’t lost an SEC game. That’s put them in a good position to thrive this November. After all, win out and they’ll be in the SEC Championship Game. Get there, and they’ll be in the College Football Playoff.
Galloway has Texas A&M third in his rankings. This comes as the final SEC team without a loss on the season went into Baton Rouge and dominated LSU. It was an exclamation point on what has been a phenomenal first couple months of the season.
As of now, it appears that Texas A&M is heading toward a showdown with Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. Of course, that is if both teams take care of business down the stretch in November. That’s never easy to do in the SEC, but the Aggies look completely capable of doing so.

Joey Galloway has Indiana fourth in his current rankings. This comes following a 56-6 win over UCLA. It would be their third-straight win by double-digits. It also was a sign that this year’s team might even be better than they were a year ago.
If Indiana can hold on for the rest of the season, the Hoosiers would likely see Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game. First, they’ll need to focus on the task at hand, though. That’s a road trip to Maryland.
The third SEC team that Galloway has ranked in his Top 5 ranking is Georgia. Unlike those other SEC teams, however, Georgia would need some help to get to the SEC Championship Game. They’ve suffered a loss to Alabama, giving the Crimson Tide essentially a two-game edge over the Bulldogs. Then, they won’t get to play the Aggies head-to-head.
Instead, Georgia needs to focus on winning and avoid a letdown. That starts with Florida to open the month of November. After that, it’s a matter of getting help from those other tough SEC teams.
