‘Dancing With the Stars’ Pro Pasha Pashkov on Carrie Ann Inaba’s Criticism

While “Dancing With the Stars” dedication night was filled with love and positivity, there were a few moments that left some of the pros feeling less than happy.

Although Danielle Fishel and Pasha Pashkov‘s jive during the Oct. 14 episode was filled with “Boy Meets World” nostalgia, judge Carrie Ann Inaba wasn’t impressed.

“I love a throwback, but I have to say this. Some of your dances are starting to feel like I’m watching the same dance over and over again,” she said, receiving loud boos from the audience. “Try to give a little bit more variety as far as dynamics. This is also on you, Pasha.”

Although Fishel has been vocal about wanting any feedback she can get from the judges, Pashkov wasn’t thrilled about the remark.

“I was not happy. I always get protective. For me, that comment felt unfair, especially being that she said that the dances looked similar. But the thing is, we did have a quickstep and we had a jive this week. These are two dances that very, very similar,” he explained to Variety after the routine. “If we had dances that were drastically different and they felt the same, I’d understand. But, based on the dances that we had, that did not feel like it made sense to me. In my heart, I’m overprotective because I know how hard Danielle is working. I don’t think she deserved that comment.”

Fishel added that she understood both Inaba’s comment and what Pashkov was saying. She also noted that her series premiere dance was a tango — a style that’s usually more serious.

“My tango was a story about me overcoming breast cancer. It was also the first episode of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ where people were being introduced to me again. There was no way I was going to do my first week and not smile and show the way I was feeling,” said Fishel. “So I had a tango where I smiled, then I had a cha-cha where I smiled, then I had a quick step where I smiled, and now tonight, I had a jive where I was smiling. She’s not wrong… All I know is next week, it’s the perfect setup for our Argentine Tango.”

Pashkov wasn’t the only pro dancer surprised by the judges during dedication night. Alan Bersten was visibly upset when he and partner Elaine Hendrix received a score of 29 out of 40 for their foxtrot. After the cameras stopped rolling, he angrily walked out of the skybox before coming back up and reassuring Hendrix that she did a great job.

“I think Elaine absolutely crushed it, and I’m so proud of her. It’s a tough competition, and I want her to know that she’s doing a good job,” he told Variety. “I was shocked [by the 7s]. I see Elaine working so hard every single day, and we don’t see votes. We only get the quick feedback from the judges, and I respect them. I thought she did a great job.”

“Dancing With the Stars” airs on ABC and Disney+ on Tuesdays, and streams the next day on Hulu.
