We’re at a point in time when celebrity Halloween costumes are just excuses for extravagant Instagram photo shoots. But I have to hand it to Demi Lovato, who dressed up as her viral meme Poot Lovato for the holiday. Spooky!
For those who do not remember, Poot Lovato was born in 2015 when a fan posted an altered image of Lovato on Tumblr and joked that it was her long-lost twin who was locked away in a basement. Poot went viral and inspired a fan fiction on Wattpad called “The Secret Life of Poot Lovato.” Lovato was notably not fond of Poot until years later, when she realized that it wasn’t actually a bad photo of her after all. “I was like, ‘Oh, no. That’s a really bad angle.’ But Poot was Photoshopped,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in 2023. “Later, I felt better about it because I realized that wasn’t my face.”
Since then, Lovato has leaned more into her internet lore. There were cupcakes decorated with Poot served at her 31st birthday in 2023, and earlier this year, the singer joked that she was “never letting her out” of the basement on TikTok.
Lovato’s costume reveal on Instagram included photos of her dressed as Poot seemingly in a basement and a video of her glam team transforming her into the ghostly-looking meme. “Happy Halloween and happy one week of intd!!! been so locked in this era thought i’d let pootvato out 🔒🤍,” she captioned the post. “They’ve been in the basement so long :(,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “Step aside Heidi, Demi just WON Halloween with Pootvato!” Long live Poot!
