Diane Keaton’s family recently shared that the late actress’ cause of death was pneumonia, but other sources are saying she was secretly dealing with another issue behind the scenes.
According to Showbiz 411 and NewsNation, Keaton was suffering from dementia.
“She was battling it for years,” a source told NewsNation. She reportedly struggled with her lines on the set of the film, Maybe I Do, which was filmed in 2022. “It was so sad,” they shared while noting she wore an earpiece for her lines to be fed to her. “(Co-star) William H. Macy was very supportive, but it was also frustrating because if there was any stopping — a bathroom break, a meal, anything — it was back to square one. It was heartbreaking to watch. She was just so lovely.”
Keaton’s mother, Dorothy Deanne, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and waged a 15-year battle before her death in 2008. She wrote about the heartbreaking goodbye in her 2011 memoir, Then Again. “Goodbye to names of places; goodbye to… recognizing me as her daughter,” she wrote in the book.

Showbiz 411 is also claiming that she spent the last few months in Palm Springs, California, at the Smoke Tree Ranch Resort, surrounded by “family and caregivers” because it was a place known for being “discreet.”
Songwriter Carole Bayer Sager told People on Oct. 12 that she hadn’t seen much of Keaton this year because the late actress “spent months in Palm Springs after the wildfires in California in January.” When Sager finally caught up with her pal, “she was very thin” and “had lost so much weight.”
“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,” added Sager. “She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost.”
The Something’s Gotta Give star’s family has not confirmed any of the dementia reports. Their last statement was to People on Oct. 16 about the cause of her death.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” reads the statement.
The statement continued, “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
Keaton died on Oct. 11 at the age of 79.
