BOISE, Idaho – Doug Martin, one of Boise State’s best running backs in school history and a seven-year NFL veteran, passed away this weekend. He was 36.

A member of the Boise State football program from 2007-11, Martin was a two-time first team all-conference honoree and still ranks in Boise State’s top-10 for career rushing yards (eighth, 3,431 yards), rushing touchdowns (sixth, 43), rush attempts (ninth, 617), yards per carry (eighth, 5.56) and rushing yards per game (ninth, 66.0). He is also tied for fourth in school history with 17 100-yard games in a career.

After redshirting as a true freshman in 2007, Martin helped the Broncos finish in the top-10 of the BCS rankings in four straight seasons (2008-11). Boise State also won three conference titles over the same stretch and posted a 50-3 overall record.

Martin arrived at Boise State out of Stockton, Calif. in 2007, a season after the historic 13-0 campaign in 2006 that culminated with the Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma. He played in 11 games as a redshirt freshman in 2008 when the Broncos went 12-1, won the Western Athletic Conference, and finished the year ranked No. 9 in the BCS rankings.

In 2009, he broke out with 765 yards on the ground and a team-best 15 rushing touchdowns as the Broncos finished the season undefeated once again at 14-0.

Martin was the team’s leading rusher in 2010 and 2011, cracking the 1,000-yard mark in both seasons. As a redshirt junior, he had 1,260 rushing yards with 12 touchdowns. He also had 338 receiving yards on 28 catches to give him a career-best 1,598 all-purpose yards, all of which helped him be named All-WAC First Team. As a redshirt senior in 2011, he turned in a personal-best 1,299 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns and earned first team All-Mountain West honors. The Broncos, in their first season in the Mountain West, closed out Martin’s senior season ranked No. 7 in the final BCS rankings and won their third straight bowl game. He was also the 2011 Las Vegas Bowl MVP.

Martin is one of six Broncos to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. He was taken 31st overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2012 NFL Draft. He was the first Boise State running back to be taken in the first round and is one of only two Bronco backs to be selected in the first round. Ashton Jeanty joined him in that club this past April.

As a rookie with the Buccaneers, he was a Pro Bowler and finalist for offensive rookie of the year after rushing for 1,454 yards, totaling 472 receiving yards, and scoring 12 total touchdowns.

He went on to be named first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler in 2015 with the Buccaneers when he rushed for 1,402 yards and finished the year with 1,673 yards from scrimmage and seven total touchdowns.

After six seasons with the Buccaneers, Martin played his final NFL season with his hometown Oakland Raiders in 2018. He ran for his third-highest total rushing yards in his career with 723.

In 84 career NFL games, Martin rushed for 5,356 yards and 30 touchdowns. He had 6,563 yards from scrimmage, as he had 1,207 receiving yards, and scored 32 total touchdowns.
