Samsung’s first trifold phone will only be available in select regions. Leaker Evan Blass has countered recent rumors about US availability and revealed the names of the markets where the device will be sold.
No Galaxy TriFold for most customers
The Samsung TriFold may not come to the US after all.
Blass says that Samsung’s triple-folding handset will only come to South Korea, China, Singapore, Taiwan, and possibly the UAE. Other markets, including Europe and North America, are out of luck.This contradicts a report from CNN, which said that Samsung was contemplating releasing the tri-fold device in the US.
The leak is hardly surprising, considering Samsung traditionally plays it safe with new form factors and experimental devices. One recent example is the Galaxy Z Fold 6 SE, which was only launched in South Korea and China.
US customers could be waiting a long time for triple-folding devices
Huawei is the only company that has already released a tri-folding smartphone, but its phones are not sold in the US.Given Samsung’s cautious approach, it could be a while before the company brings its tri-fold device to mainstream markets.
The company is reportedly going to produce only 50,000 units, which suggests it’s not optimistic about the sales prospects. Samsung has had the TriFold ready to go into production for quite some time, but the holdup has been caused by uncertainty about the viability of the new product. The company isn’t sure if demand exists for this form factor.
Another reason behind the restricted launch could be the device’s rumored $3,000 price tag. That’s a steep price for a smartphone, and not many people may be willing to splurge on it.
Samsung’s tri-fold phone will fold in two places and is expected to provide a more tablet-like experience than its Galaxy Z Fold phones, which only fold once.
The device will be the biggest shake-up in the lineup since the launch of Samsung’s first foldable handset in 2019.
A blessing in disguise?
While early adopters may be disappointed by the leak, Blass thinks it’s all for the best. After all, Samsung’s first foldable had a rocky launch, and given that the TriFold will be even more complicated, buying the first-generation device won’t be practical.That said, tech enthusiasts care more about being the first to get their hands on novel form factors, so this is going to be a downer.
The TriFold, which may alternatively be known as the Galaxy G Fold or Multifold 7, or even something entirely new, will be announced at the APEC Summit next month. According to Bloomberg, the device will be displayed under glass, and no one will be allowed hands-on time. It’s scheduled to go on sale later this year.
