Ahead of a promised wider rollout “later this year,” Gemini has shown up early for at least one Google TV user which offers a quick look at the setup process.

Google TV is adding Gemini as a replacement for Google Assistant, with new features and capabilities on the way. However, the upgraded AI assistant is currently only available on a single Google TV device – the TCL QM9K series, which starts at $3,000 (but is already $1,000 off). Officially, the expectation is that the feature will come to other devices “later this year” for devices running Android 14.

But it seems that we might be approaching a wider debut.

One Sony Bravia owner reports that Gemini for Google TV showed up on their TV. The user posted screenshots of Gemini’s setup process which includes more information on how it differs from the Assistant experience, a disclaimer around the irreliable nature of generative AI responses, a toggle for allowing Gemini to use personal data, and a prominent UI for picking the voice of Gemini on your TV. There are 10 total voices for Gemini on Google TV, matching the number found on mobile devices. The names and descriptions of Gemini voices on Google TV are a bit different from what you’ll find on mobile, though.

The list of Gemini voices on Google TV doesn’t directly match the list on Android, but rather leverages the voices found on Nest speakers.

Google last updated the list of Gemini voices on mobile in September 2024, but made further changes to the voices available on speakers as recently as August of this year.

The correlation of Gemini voices on TV sharing the same list as speakers makes sense, and certainly provides a nice layer of cohesion between speakers and TVs, especially as Google TV sets with built-in “Hey Google” functionality are becoming abundant.

As it stands today, though, this is the only public-facing report we’ve found of Gemini going live on a Google TV device other than TCL’s new flagship. The user who spotted it has some history in enabling new features on Samsung devices, but there’s no claim being made about the TV. This does seem like it might an unfinished release, though, as the Gemini logos seen on the voice selection page haven’t been updated to Google’s new style. Then again, a recent video from Google on the feature also showed an outdated logo in use.
