New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo has been released from the hospital after having surgery on the serious ankle injury he suffered in the second quarter of the team’s matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
“Cam Skattebo underwent successful surgery on his dislocated ankle last night at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Presbyterian campus,” the Giants said in a statement, via Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. “He has been discharged from the hospital and will begin rehab immediately.”
New York head coach Brian Daboll said earlier on Monday that “all went well” with the surgery.
“All went well,” Daboll said on Monday, per the Associated Press’ Dan Gelston. “He’s recovering. Obviously, he’ll be missed but on the road to recovery. …He’s got a road ahead of him.”
Garafolo reported that Skattebo sustained a dislocated ankle and was taken to a local hospital for further testing after leaving the game. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network previously reported surgery was scheduled for Sunday.
Skattebo’s injury occurred while he fell to the ground after attempting to catch a pass that ultimately fell incomplete.
He was eventually carted off the field and was ruled out soon after with an ankle injury.
After the game, New York quarterback Jaxson Dart said he was “devastated” by the injury:
Skattebo rushed for 12 yards on three carries prior to exiting the contest. He also hauled in an 18-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.
New York’s young talent has been hit hard by injuries in 2025, as second-year receiver Malik Nabers was already ruled out for the season with a torn ACL that he suffered in the team’s Week 4 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
As for Skattebo, he was off to a hot start to the year after the Giants selected him with a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
The former Arizona State standout opened the regular season as a depth piece before entering New York’s starting offense in Week 4 as Tyrone Tracy Jr. dealt with a shoulder injury.
Skattebo immediately thrived with an increased workload, showcasing his ability to fight through contact and pick up extra yards.
Heading into Sunday’s action, the 23-year-old rushed for 398 yards and five touchdowns in seven games. He also made an impact in New York’s passing attack, recording 23 catches for 189 yards and a score.
With Skattebo out, the Giants will turn to Tracy as their starting running back once again.
