Golden Bachelor Mel Owens ‘Shocked’ After Cindy Breaks Up With Him, Doesn’t Propose to Peg in Finale
Mel Owens’ love story was full of twists and turns.
On Wednesday, November 12, the 66-year-old retired NFL player’s search to find love came to a close on The Golden Bachelor finale.
During the attorney’s Fantasy Suite date with Cindy Angelcyk Cullers, she shockingly broke up with him because she wasn’t confident he could give her a proposal.
“He’s not interested in making any type of commitments for several years,” she told cameras. “I’m in my golden years. I’m 60 years old, and I’m not interested in being put on hold. He is just not my person.”
As for the former athlete, he was “shocked” when Cullers called it quits.
“The date with Cindy — it was perfect,” Owens told cameras. “I came in tonight thinking there was a future, but she quit.”
“I don’t have that choice, now I don’t, she’s gone,” he remarked. “I don’t know what I’m gonna do.”

After the breakup, host Jesse Palmer came in and had a conversation with Owens, telling him, “It sounds like you don’t know right now, coming into tonight, if it was Peg [Munson] or if it was Cindy?”
“No, I didn’t know, God’s honest truth, I didn’t know,” Owens admitted.
During her “After the Final Rose” interview, Cullers explained part of what she was missing from her romance with Owens.
“I loved it when Mel would say ‘You’re beautiful’ or give me compliments, ‘You’re so smart,’ but how does that fit into your life?” she asked. “Why does that matter to you? I needed to hear the ‘and’ the ‘because.’”
“‘I can see our life together because… I love that you are kind to people.’ Not ‘you’re just a nice person, and this is fine, and this is great,’” she explained. “I needed to know specifics about how I related to his life. He just was observing me.”
Cullers also emphasized that an engagement was part of the plan, and Owens deviated from that.
“We [the women] were in it for the finish line, being an engagement and a commitment, and the hope of finding love this way, as crazy as it may be,” she added.
While Owens did not get down on one knee in the finale, he did find his happily ever after, giving his final rose to Munson, 62. The couple appeared on “After the Final Rose” and are still going strong.
