Golden Retriever Puppies Practicing to ‘Sit Nice’ for Their Food Will Make Your Whole Week

If you’ve ever had the absolute joy of raising a puppy, you know that this time in a dog’s life can also bring a lot of chaos. Not only are they full of energy and curious about everything, but if you’re bringing home a brand new pup, they aren’t going to be trained very well quite yet. What rules? Where?!

These Golden Retriever puppies in the video below are built a bit differently, though…

This video from @worldofgoldenss shows two puppies who are already amazing at following commands — even when food is involved.

You can tell that the last thing either of them wants to do is “sit nice” while they wait to be served their food, but they both managed to do it like champions (even though they were both practically vibrating with excitement).

Between the chattering teeth and wagging tails, they were so excited… but they sat like they were told anyway. Good puppies!

What Age Is Best for Training Puppies?

According to what dog trainer Kate Naito told the American Kennel Club (AKC), the earlier you start training your dog, the better — the first few months of their lives are the best time for them to learn and to cement good habits. So if you adopt a dog at around eight weeks old like many people do, you can get started with training right away.

If you and this puppy are new to each other, you’ll want to form a strong emotional foundation first, since this is what will help them trust you and make it easier for them to cooperate when you’re trying to teach them new tricks.

“If a puppy learns not to trust humans—maybe because they yell and punish, steal his food dish to establish dominance, or force him into scary situations—you will have an uphill battle teaching life skills later on,” Naito said.

Naito suggests keeping it simple at first, starting with commands like “sit” using plenty of positive enforcement, and you can build on their skills from there. Before you know it, your puppy will be a total pro.
