Google Fi is getting a series of notable updates in the coming weeks that improve messaging, browsing, and calling, with Google AI playing a role.
Google Fi is upgrading its Messages for web integration to support RCS. Featuring a new interface, RCS means that you get high-resolution photos and videos “from any computer or tablet’s web browser.” You still have the ability to make calls and check voicemail online, which is a feature exclusive to Google Fi. This is rolling out to Android users in the coming weeks, or around early December.
What was previously known as the Google Fi W+ network of “premium” Wi-Fi spots is significantly expanding. This is meant to address how it can “still [be] difficult to get a strong cell signal in indoor venues.” On Pixel phones, “Wi-Fi Auto Connect+” is now available in “tens of millions of locations” across the US, including:
- Major airports like LAX, ORD, and JFK
- Participating shopping malls and stores
Notably, Wi-Fi Auto Connect+ will no longer count against your monthly data caps. These automatic connections are secured with a VPN. Like before, W+ will appear in your status bar when you’re automatically connected.
Google Fi now offers HD calling, which will be noted on the calling screen when active. It requires all parties to be on networks that support VoLTE, VoNR, or WFC.
Meanwhile, when you’re on a call with a landline or older device, Google Fi will now leverage AI-enhanced audio. Google AI will “automatically filter out distracting background noise and clarify voices on both ends of the line for more natural-sounding conversations.” This can be disabled in the Google Fi app, and will be available next month.
Meanwhile, Fi bills will show AI-powered summaries that can “explain charges, any changes from the previous month and how recent plan adjustments will affect future costs.” This is available with the mobile app and website.
