Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal Take on an Army

The first trailer for Guy Ritchie‘s long-awaited action-thriller “In the Grey” is finally here and it boasts the director’s signature cocktail of sharply-edited guns, explosions and attitude.

Being released by Black Bear on May 15, the film follows a covert team of elite operatives sent to take on a ruthless despot and steal back a billion-dollar fortune he cheekily swiped for himself. As the trailer suggests, much of the action is perpetrated by the team’s two heavies, a cocky American known as Bronco (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a more no-nonsense Brit called Sid (Henry Cavill), both more than adept in things that go bang and boom, with Eiza González as their handler. Per the synopsis: “What begins as an impossible heist gets much worse, spiraling into an all-out war of strategy, deception and survival.”

Kristofer Hivju, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jason Wong and Michael Vu also star, alongside Fisher Stevens, Rosamund Pike and Carlos Bardem.

First announced in 2023 and wrapping later that having been granted an interim agreement to allow the actors to work during the SAG-AFTRA strike, “In the Grey” was originally due for release in early 2025. However, Lionsgate, which had bought the film initially, pulled the film from its schedule as post-production wasn’t complete. Black Bear — which had produced and sold the film — then took the rights for its newly-launched U.S. distribution arm, with Lionsgate continuing to handle the film’s digital and pay-TV distribution. The film was produced by John Friedberg, Dave Caplan, Ritchie and Ivan Atkinson.

“In the Grey” arrives in the midst of a exceptionally busy few years for Ritchie on both the big screen and small, with back-to-back projects.

After first teaming with Gyllenhaal on 2023’s “The Covenant,” 2024 saw the release of “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” (starring Cavill), followed by “Fountain of Youth” last year. Meanwhile, “Wife and Dog” is currently in post-production and due for release this year, while “Viva La Madness” is now in production. On TV, following last year’s “MobLand” (which was recommissioned for a second season), Prime Video just released “Young Sherlock,” while the second season of “The Gentleman” has been completed and is now awaiting a release date from Netflix.
