How Running Back Keaton Mitchell Fits in Chargers Offense

Overall, Mitchell has shown a penchant for explosive plays as he has averaged 6.3 yards per carry in his career.

The Chargers will gladly welcome that kind of juice in a backfield where they already have Omarion Hampton and Kimani Vidal.

Hampton, to be clear, is entrenched as the Chargers lead back after the potential and flash he showed in 2024 as a first-round pick.

Vidal is a vital piece, too, as he carried the load at times in the backfield in 2025 with 643 rushing yards, including a trio of 100-yard performances.

With both Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh and Offensive Coordinator Mike McDaniel placing an emphasis on running the ball, Mitchell is a valuable addition to the Bolts running back room.

Mitchell, who is 5-foot-8 and 190 pounds, won’t be asked to be the featured back in powder blue.

But with his 4.37 speed, he can be a change-of-pace back who can hit opposing defenses with big plays when Hampton or Vidal need a breather.

Even with Justin Herbert at quarterback, the Chargers want to be a tough, gritty team that can win in the fourth quarter by running the ball and wearing down opposing defenses.

Adding Mitchell into the mix is another way for the Bolts to accomplish that goal.
