LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team turned aside Michigan State 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 in front of a crowd of 8,496 at John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday night.
Nebraska (20-0, 10-0 Big Ten) extended its streak of consecutive sweeps to 11 and consecutive sets won to 34. Both are the best since 2007. NU also improved to 56-0 on the season when reaching the red zone (20 points) first.
Bergen Reilly had 37 assists, eight digs and five blocks to lead the Huskers to a .382 hitting percentage. Reilly passed Lauren Cook for No. 4 in career assists in the rally-scoring era, now with 3,225.
Six different Huskers had at least five kills: Teraya Sigler (9), Rebekah Allick (8), Harper Murray (8), Virginia Adriano (7), Andi Jackson (7) and Manaia Ogbechie (5).
Murray and Laney Choboy led the way with 10 digs each. Jackson had five blocks, and Murray had four. NU limited MSU (15-5, 5-5 Big Ten) to a .118 hitting precentage.
Nebraska led in kills (53-27), blocks (11-9) and digs (46-27).
Set 1: NU started the match with an 11-2 lead after four kills by Sigler and two by Adriano. Leading 13-7, the Huskers went on a five-point run served by Sigler with Adriano adding two more kills. Three kills from Murray helped the Huskers to a 21-10 lead, and NU won 25-15 after a kill by Allick and a block by Allick and Murray.
Set 2: NU trailed 5-3 before scoring five in a row with Jackson serving. Allick had two kills and a block with Reilly in that stretch to make it 8-5. Jackson was in on back-to-back blocks with Reilly and Sigler before a kill by Sigler made it 17-11. Skyler Pierce checked in and immediately terminated a kill, and three straight kills by Allick on serves by Maisie Boesiger made it 21-12. Boesiger’s 6-0 service run continued with an MSU hitting error and a block by Allick and Reilly. Allick’s seventh kill of the set ended it, 25-15.
Set 3: MSU took a 6-3 lead, but the Huskers battled back to take a 10-9 lead after back-to-back-to-back kills by Pierce, Sczech and Ogbechie. A block by Sczech and Ogbechie put NU up 11-9. The lead increased to 15-11 after kills by Jackson and Sigler, and Reilly posted two kills to get NU to an 18-14 advantage. The Spartans cut it to 18-16, but Ogbechie answered with two straight kills to make it 20-16. Jackson recorded a kill and a block with Allick, and a kill by Murray earned match point, which the Huskers got via a block by Jackson and Reilly to win 25-18.
