Instant grades for Patriots free agency signing Romeo Doubs
The New England Patriots had shown interest in several wide receivers, and on Tuesday they finally signed one. Former Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs is coming to Foxborough on a reported four-year, $68 million free agency deal.
Let’s put a grade on the signing based on everything we know so far.
Instant grades: Patriots sign WR Romeo Doubs
Bernd Buchmasser: Doubs may not be the No. 1 wide receiver the Patriots would have gotten had they signed Alec Pierce or traded for A.J. Brown, but he is a promising complementary piece at what is still a steep but overall lower price. He projects as a perimeter weapon in New England that should fit in well with how Josh McDaniels likes to use his receivers: he is not a true volume guy but capable of making a positive impact whenever called upon. | Grade: B+
Matt St. Jean: Doubs alone won’t solve New England’s wide receiver issues, but he’s a quality option to help replace Stefon Diggs. Doubs can do a bit of everything while playing outside the numbers, which should help put Kayshon Boutte in better positions as well. He’s a consistent, high-floor WR2 type, which will provide a lift for this group while they continue searching for a truly dynamic weapon to pair with Maye. | Grade: B+
Pat Lane: The Patriots needed to replace Stefon Diggs, and Doubs should do that very well. He is a very good route runner, and should provide some real upside for the Patriots since he turns 26 next month. This isn’t the only move they should be making, but the receiving corps is much better than it was yesterday | Grade: B+
Andrew Guindon: Doubs isn’t the top-end receiver Patriots fans have long hoped for, but he’s a talented red-zone threat. He’s hauled in 21 touchdowns in four seasons. Josh McDaniels is going to love his versatility along offensive formations as well. The NFL salary cap is hitting record numbers every year now, so the contract is right on the money value-wise. Doubs would be a great compliment to another playmaker beside him. | Grade: A-
