STATE OF THE RACE IN 30 SECONDS

With one week left, the race has predictably tightened. While recent polls still show Zohran Mamdani with a comfortable double-digit lead, they also show that Andrew Cuomo has been able to consolidate the voters left without a candidate since Eric Adams dropped out. And if you’ve been anywhere near a TV over the past few weeks, you know that super PACs supporting Cuomo have been slamming the airwaves with Islamophobic advertisements opposing Mamdani (more on that below). Early voting has begun and the one main takeaway: a lot of people are voting! Gothamist’s interpretation of the age of voters (the majority being Gen X and Boomers) has been that the early vote looks very good for Cuomo. But the actual cross-tabs in polling of older voters doesn’t actually speak to that much of an advantage for Cuomo (we also get into that below). Is this what Cuo-mentum looks like? How close is this race? And how can we even predict an unprecedented competitive general election mayoral race when New York City hasn’t had one since 2009? All we know at this point is that in a week, this race will finally be over…We hope.
