Jill Zarin fired from ‘Real Housewives’ revival show after controversial Bad Bunny comments
Original “Real Housewives of New York” cast member Jill Zarin has been fired from a “RHONY” revival show after she posted a social media video that criticized Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show for being in Spanish and for what she said was a lack of white people.
Zarin was set to star on “The Golden Life,” an E! docuseries that was announced Feb. 3 and will feature other former “RHONY” cast members, including Sonja Morgan, Luanne de Lesseps, Ramona Singer and Kelly Bensimon.
“In light of recent public comments made by Jill Zarin, Blink49 Studios has decided not to move forward with her involvement in The Golden Life,” Blink49, the production company behind the new show, said in a statement Tuesday. “We remain committed to delivering the series in line with our company standards and values.”
Representatives for Zarin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Zarin published the video to Instagram on Sunday, shortly after the Puerto Rican artist’s performance. She called it “the worst halftime show ever” and expressed frustration at its being mostly in Spanish.
“I don’t speak Spanish. I would’ve liked to have known the words that he was saying,” Zarin said. “To me, it looked like a political statement because there were literally no white people in the entire thing.”
Lady Gaga, who is white, was featured prominently in the halftime show, singing a version of her song “Die With a Smile.”
Zarin criticized the NFL for selecting Bad Bunny as its halftime performer, saying it “sold out.” She added that she believes the concert “was an ICE thing,” an apparent reference to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the turmoil surrounding the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota and throughout the country.
The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday. Ahead of the show, Commissioner Roger Goodell defended the decision to select Bad Bunny as the headliner, calling him “one of the great artists in the world.”
The halftime performance was largely a celebration of Latino culture that featured a message of inclusivity and unity.
Bad Bunny closed the show saying — in English — “God Bless America” while shouting out all the countries across North, Central and South America, including the United States. He held up a football emblazoned with the words “Together we are America.”
Zarin’s video, which she took down shortly after it was posted, generated a lot of criticism.
“Glad the mask finally came off and you showed your true colors!” a commenter wrote under one of Zarin’s Instagram posts.
“Take ur hate and racism elsewhere,” another wrote.
The video also prompted many fans to ask E! to reconsider casting Zarin for “The Golden Life,” with many trying to tag the channel in her comments. The network referred NBC News to Blink49’s statement.
Zarin Fabrics, a Manhattan textiles store previously owned by Zarin’s late husband, distanced itself from the former reality star in a statement on social media.
“Zarin Fabrics stands firmly against racism, discrimination, and rhetoric that seeks to exclude or diminish people based on identity, culture, or background,” the statement read. The fabric store also shared a picture of Zarin’s face with a big, red “X” on it.
Zarin is not the only former housewife to have expressed a controversial opinion about Bad Bunny’s halftime show.
Former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” original cast member Taylor Armstrong shared an Instagram story featuring her in a gladiator costume with the caption: “Were you entertained?? I am embarassed for the @NFL and Apple for the Super Bowl half time show totally in Spanish with a Cuban flag !!”
Zarin disabled the comments on many of her Instagram posts following the backlash, but that did not stop commenters, including Sonja Morgan, from sharing their thoughts on other “RHONY” OGs’ social media.
Morgan shared her thoughts about Bad Bunny’s performance Monday, extending love to her “Latin friends and supporters.”
“Let’s not be devisive. Let’s be incluuuuusive,” Morgan wrote on Instagram, quoting a line she said during her time on “RHONY.”
Fans commended Morgan for her support, while some expressed that they would not watch “The Golden Life” if Zarin was on it.
“We want to support u but we can’t watch the show with Jill on it!” a commenter wrote.
