The New York Jets are acquiring wide receiver John Metchie III from the Philadelphia Eagles, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.

The Eagles are also sending a 2027 sixth-round pick to New York for cornerback Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh-rounder.

Carter bid adieu to the Jets on social media:

Metchie, who landed with Philly in an August trade, caught four passes for 18 yards in seven games for the Eagles.

A second-round pick in the 2022 draft, the former Alabama star spent his first two years with the Houston Texans. He had 412 receiving yards and one touchdown across 29 appearances.

The Jets are sitting at 1-7 with little hope of reaching the playoffs. They might as well see whether Metchie, who’s a restricted free agent in the offseason, has any upside. He should get a bigger showcase in New York than he had in Philly, too.

Carter, meanwhile, provides immediate help to the Eagles as they try to win a second straight Super Bowl. The Jets’ ongoing struggles made them less of a logical fit for a veteran corner on relatively big money.

The 26-year-old, who played almost half of New York’s defensive snaps this year, had 14 tackles and two pass breakups in five games.

Philadelphia’s defense has gone backward after allowing the fewest yards and second-fewest points in 2024. The unit ranks 20th and 18th in those two categories.

Perhaps utilizing Carter as a slot corner and moving Cooper DeJean to an outside role can make a meaningful difference in the second half.
