This Halloween, Julia Fox chose to dress as Jackie Kennedy. But not just any Jackie Kennedy.
Pink suit and all, Fox channeled the 1963 first lady covered in blood after President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 assassination in Dallas, Texas.
She wore the controversial costume — comprised of a double-breasted pink tweed skirt set, pillbox hat and structured handbag — at The Cursed Amulet’s Halloween party in New York City on Thursday night.
The first lady famously chose to stand next to Lyndon B. Johnson as he was sworn in as the next president, wearing the same Chez Ninon outfit she had on as she held her late husband in the ill-fated convertible.
Historian Steve Gillon told People in 2022 that “Despite these horrible circumstances, she was willing to stand for a photo because she understood what it meant for the nation to have continuity in government,” adding, “She understood that she had a role to play in helping the nation transition to a new president.”
“They actually had another dress laid out for her to put on and she refused,” Gillon shared.
The outfit, still blood-stained, now resides at the National Archives, as it has since 1964. According to the Los Angeles Times, Kennedy’s maid, Providencia Paredes, stashed the suit in a bag once the first lady returned to the White House.
“Sometime in the next six months, a box arrived at the National Archives’ downtown headquarters, where such treasures as the Constitution and Bill of Rights are kept,” the LA Times’ Faye Fiore wrote.
“In it was the suit, blouse, handbag and shoes, even her stockings, along with an unsigned note on the letterhead stationery of Janet Auchincloss, Mrs. Kennedy’s mother: ‘Jackie’s suit and bag worn Nov. 22, 1963.’”
It comes as no surprise that Fox might have crossed a line with her Halloween getup.
When People shared footage of the star’s costume on Instagram, commenters were largely disgusted — and made their opinions known.
“This is disturbing,” wrote one.
Added another, “This is NOT okay. Sorry to the Onassis and Kennedy families for having to see and relive this. 😢.”
A third commenter chimed in with, “So tasteless. Tragedy is not a costume.”
Fox has yet to comment on her costume choice — but for an actress who often turns heads with her sartorial choices, this one likely didn’t receive the reaction she was hoping for.
